Selling Art Online – Does It Work?
If you are interested at all in art and photography, you will no doubt have noticed the huge number of impressive looking online galleries all over the internet. Judging by the numbers of signed up artists and photographers they seem extremely popular. But do these online galleries actually sell the work they display?
Well yes, quite often. It is a fact that many artists do very well selling art and photography on the internet. However, as with any offline gallery, showing work simply provides the opportunity to be seen by a larger audience thereby increasing chances of making sales. That said, the internet is a gateway to a worldwide audience and by joining an online gallery an artist has the potential of tapping into it. A word of caution though; some galleries are far easier to find than others. This is very important because no matter how attractive the layout of an online gallery appears, if customers can’t find it then the artwork is not going to be seen.

Marketing Your Art to Your Niche Online
You’ve found your niche online and have interested readers filtering into your website through forums and social networks. How do you get them to make a purchase?
* Know your competition. Study the work of other online artists with work truly comparable (popularity, experience, subject, style, size) and note their prices. Take a hard look at what they’re offering and for how much. Then undersell them. People shop online because they are looking for good deals. Give them one.
* Know your audience. Try posting a friendly, anonymous survey up on your site, asking your reader some basic questions: where they live, age range, gender, and their art-buying price range. If they already like your art, they will be happy to help you out. If they don’t, then you don’t need their demographic information anyway. Use your findings to think strategically about where you promote your website and how much you sell your work for. (Note: Many blog servers like Blogger and WordPress offer survey widgets which will also do the trick.)

eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Artfire – Which is the Best Place For Selling Modern Art? By Avril Harper
Like many people I do most of my online selling on eBay, I rarely sell my products anywhere else. I had better rephrase that: I don’t actually sell ANY of my products outside of eBay. That applies to antiques and collectibles as well as more recent creations usually sourced direct from their maker.
And that means I occasionally sell other people’s artwork on eBay, usually artists I’ve met at art and craft fairs and some I’ve seen exhibiting their work in local art galleries, restaurants and numerous other locations.
